Cartridge Recycling Back to Tursi's Homepage

This page describes an alternate method of recycling classic game catridges for new ROMs - whether Betas or your own software. I find desoldering the old chip(s) and cleaning the pin holes to be very time consuming - this method brings the board preparation down to about 5 minutes with the help of a Dremel or other cutting tool. There is also less chance of lifting traces due to heat (although there's a chance of cutting them! Be careful!)

If nobody else has already grabbed this technique, I would like to follow other hack pioneers like Tom Duff and name it the Tursi Technique (TT for short). ;)

If you're going to try this, DEFINATELY wear eye protection and you should also wear a dust mask! There will be bits of metal and plastic, circuit board, IC shell, and other dusts floating around that are not good to inhale!

We start, somewhat, appropriately, with this Atari Jaguar 'Cannon Fodder' cartridge. Using the Dremel, cut the pins along the top where they meet the chip.

You'll be left with a board that looks like this. Be careful not to cut so deep that you damage the traces on the board, and watch out for the capacitors and other chips. If you damage them, you must replace them.

However, don't be concerned about damage to the original chip. You were only going to throw it out or lose it anyway. ;)

The new chip will need to be fitted down to size, as the legs are too tall to fit in most carts without the holes present.

Fold the legs by rolling the chip on the desk so that they bend underneath it. Do one side, then the other, then press more or less flat to flatten them.

Once folded over, use a little pressure to keep everything as tightly tucked together as you can.
